6/23/2007 - Dive Report - Wrecksploring with the Eagle's Nest

On Saturday June 23rd the Eagle’s Nest returned to a site previously explored for the first time the year before. Wrecksploration members Jeff Bachman, Russ Lusterman, and Ken Kelleher joined the rest of the passengers and crew of the Eagle's Nest for a chance to dive this new wreck, in the hopes of locating structures or artifacts that could lead to the wreck's identification. The following dive report was submitted by Eagle's Nest crew member and Wrecksploration member Jeff Bachmann, who was also present on the first exploratory dive.

On Saturday June 23rd the Eagle’s Nest went out on a "Captain’s Choice" dive. Often he wants to search for new wrecks on Captains choice days.

Captain Howard’s choice was to return to a new wreck the Eagle’s Nest discovered towards the end of last season. Last year the Captain led us to the numbers given to him by a fisherman and performed a search pattern. 15 minutes later the depth finder showed structure on the bottom. I was suited up waiting on the bow. The captain told me what he could see on the depth finder. He wanted me to go down and investigate and if it was substantial to set the hook. The day was beautiful; sunny and calm. It doesn’t get much better. We dropped the line and the Captain said, "Fetch!" and off I went. He was as excited as the rest of us. The other crew told me he was chanting, "Find the wreck, find the wreck..." like the fans at a football game chant for a score. I landed in the sand and looked about. A few feet away was wreckage. Low lying. My depth gauge said 110'. It was exciting. To think I was probably the first person here since it sank. This is what diving is about, the sense of discovery. I swam around carrying the hook searching for a tie in point. I passed scallops and flounder, sea bass and a couple of nice lobsters thinking, I'll be back for you! I found a heavy steel beam inside a piece of rotted out plate and tied in. I sent up the cup and then did my dive. Lobster everywhere. I grabbed one 5 pounder and left the rest, (for the time being anyway.) I swam around the wreck trying to figure out what it was. The wreckage is well scattered and not easily identifiable. The largest piece I thought was a half buried boiler but then thinking about it, it wasn't right for a boiler. It was long, (at least 30 feet) and more like a tank than a boiler. There is plenty of cable in the area and we think it may be some type of working barge. Possibly it's an old hull that was converted to barge. The tank I found may have been for water or fuel for other ships it supported. We don't know.

This year we returned to the wreck. The day was rougher than last year. We grappled in and the Captain sent me down to tie in. Vis was great. About 25 feet. Huge black fish and sea bass were all over. Several dusky sharks and dogfish. I found a nice 3 lb lobster and then a 5 lb one. ( 1 for me, 1 for Darlene) and left the rest for the customers. The wreck was a little bit more covered than last year. Max depth I got was 107'. I still haven't figured out exactly what it is but I hope to someday. Everyone had a great day. Many nice size lobsters came up and a few scallops too. No artifacts though. Maybe next time.
