Wrecksploration Divers is a non-profit organization dedicated to the exploration of our local waters in search of undiscovered and unidentified shipwrecks. See our Mission.
The waters around NY are filled with shipwrecks. For every wreck that we know of, there may be a dozen that have yet to be located and identified. To many of us, each is a story waiting to be told.
Dive Boat captains frequently locate unknown targets on the ocean floor, and NOAA publishes lists of underwater obstructions, many of which have never been explored. For many years, explorations were routinely performed by dive boats to investigate the more promising targets. In recent years these trips have become scarce due in part to lack of participation, in addition to the rising costs of fuel, making it more difficult for captains to make exploration trips without paying divers. Many divers simply prefer to dive on a known wreck, rather than chance a hit-or-miss destination.
Wrecksploration is working with local dive boats to revitalize shipwreck exploration by chartering dive trips to promising targets and filling them with eager explorers. We organize exploration dives in a wide variety of depth ranges and experience requirements, suitable for divers from novice through technical levels.
Additionally, Wrecksploration is working to educate its members on the methods and resources available for shipwreck research, from historical analysis to target location and positive identification. We hope to put these skills to use to help identify historically significant targets that have yet to be found, and work towards their location, identification, and ultimately, access to these wrecks for the entire diving community.
Wrecksploration is completely staffed by volunteers.
